What we look at
Nine criteria, read in front of you
A valuation is not a feeling. It is a list of things you can see, and we go through them with you rather than disappearing into a back room.
- Origin — Tabriz, Isfahan, Nain, Qom, Kashan, Heriz, Kazak, Shirvan, Bukhara. The weave and the pattern give it away.
- Age — vegetable dyes before about 1880, chemical dyes after. The back tells you.
- Knot density — counted per square centimetre, on the back.
- Materials — wool, cork wool, silk, cotton or silk warp.
- Dyes — madder, indigo, weld. Natural dyes shade in bands; that is authenticity, not a defect.
- Condition — pile, selvedges, fringes, previous repairs.
- Size — very large pieces have a narrower market than you would think.
- Pattern — medallion, garden, tree of life, prayer, all-over.
- Signature — some workshops sign. It changes everything.
