The method
Six steps, in this order
The order matters more than the products. Washing a rug before the dust is out turns the dust into mud at the base of the knots.
Mechanical dusting
A rug holds kilos of dust a vacuum cleaner will never lift. It is beaten out first.
Colour testing
Every colour is tested on a corner. Vegetable dyes from before 1880 behave differently from chemical ones.
Hand washing
Brush and clear water, on the workshop floor, with neutral products. No rollers, which crush the pile.
Extraction
Water is spun out rather than left to evaporate, which is what causes distortion.
Flat drying
Flat, never hung. A hanging wet rug stretches under its own weight.
Brushing and check
The pile is brushed in its natural direction, and fringes and selvedges are checked before delivery.
Moths and pests
What actually eats a rug
Moths do not eat the surface. They work underneath, in the dark, along the edges and under furniture — which is why the damage is always found too late.
A rug that is dusted and washed regularly is far less attractive to them: it is the dust and the residue that feed the larvae. We treat affected areas, re-knot what has been eaten, and tell you how to store the piece so it does not start again.
